Abdominal Wall Hernia Surgery

Hernias are very common. Those affecting the abdominal wall can be tiny all the way to huge in size, and symptoms vary from annoyance to acute strangulation of bowel. A hernia simply means a hole in the muscle of your abdomen or groin, through which abdominal content (sometimes bowel) can protrude through into an abnormal position. The mainstay of treatment is surgery, to ensure abdominal contents are replaced exactly where they should be and the hole (defect) closed. Sometimes mesh needs to be used to reinforce the repair to prevent the weaker muscle opening up again.

Surgery can range from simple day case procedure to complex reconstruction, requiring multiple specialists. It all depends on the site and size of the hernia, and your overall health and medical history. Every patient needs to be investigated appropriately, counselled extensively and offered a tailored surgical treatment plan. I work closely with my colleague, Mr Alistair Slesser, at The London Clinic to offer you expert surgery tailored to your specific hernia.
