My Ethos As A Surgeon

One of the most important aspects of my practice is ensuring that each patient has a clear and comprehensive understanding of their condition. While surgery is often necessary, it is not the only therapeutic option. A thorough knowledge of medical and alternative treatments—grounded in clinical evidence and experience—allows you to make decisions that best align with your needs and circumstances.

If surgery is recommended, I will ensure that you fully understand the procedure, including its benefits, risks, and any potential long-term implications, so that you remain well informed and in control of your healthcare decisions.

I am grateful to have been trained and mentored by some of the best surgeons the UK has produced, and endeavour to replicate their commitment, honesty and integrity in my surgical practise. Above all, no matter how big or small your condition, I intend to treat each patient as if they are my own family.

Professional Background

I graduated from St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London School of Medicine before entering Higher Surgical Training with the London Deanery. I subsequently undertook comprehensive training in general surgery, including specialised experience in surgical oncology at The Royal Marsden Hospital. I developed a focused sub-specialist interest in oesophageal and gastric cancer, as well as complex benign upper gastrointestinal surgery, completing my advanced training at University College London Hospital (UCLH). During this period, I was awarded my Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

To further broaden and refine my expertise in Upper GI, emergency, and general surgery, I completed a prestgious International Fellowship in South Africa. I was thereafter appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at UCLH, where I continues to practise as a full time NHS Consultant Surgeon.

At UCLH, aside from my clinical practise, I am the Chair of the Regional Oesophago-Gastric Cancer specialist MDT, overseeing the managment of all OG cancer patients in North, Central and East London, as well as a large catchment area in East of England. Furthermore, I am Education Lead for our Resident Doctors at UCLH, overseeing their clinical development as junior surgeons. I am also part of very specialised Oesophago-Gastric Emergency on call rota, providing a niche clinical service to a large catchment area across London, East and South England, often for patients presenting in extremis.

Academic Interests

I remain actively engaged in research and academic development within general surgery, and surgical oncology in particular. I have contributed multiple book chapters and authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications.

For my MSc thesis, conducted at Cancer Research UK, I investigated chemical biomarkers for the diagnosis of pancreatic malignancy, achieving a Distinction for my work. My MD (Res) doctoral thesis examined the impact of post-operative complications on survivorship in OG cancer patients and explored novel strategies for monitoring, managing, and reducing these events. I continue to play a leading role in several ongoing studies aimed at enhancing peri-operative optimisation for patients undergoing OG cancer surgery.

International Work

Following my fellowship in South Africa, I have cultivated a strong interest in global surgical development and am working toward establishing collaborative initiatives to support surgical training in low-resource settings. I am involved with several humanitarian organisations, assisting in surgical missions abroad in war-torn and impoverished countries.

Non-Medical Interests

My personal interests outside of work include amateur mountaineering and exploration, human evolution, quantum theory and physics, politics and current affairs, and ancient history - with a particular fascination for the life and campaigns of Alexander the Great.
